The Secret to Consistency

1) On Consistency

People say “you have to be Consistent” in order to get results.

In art, the gym or life.

“want to get better at drawing, be consistent!!” they say….

But why? 🤔

• Anything of value takes time to grow.
• and growth takes continued work.
• For the work to be continual, you need consistency (the act of doing things repeatedly).

One can’t expect for a plant to grow into a tree if you keep picking the seed off the ground and planting somewhere else. 🌱

So, we now know consistency is important.

We want to be consistent,

But we are not able to.

So what’s the secret to consistent effort? 🔎

It’s this,

COMMITMENT

“the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause,  activity or goal, accompanied by the willingness to effort, time and resources even in the face of obstacles and challenges”

If you are committed, you find the necessary ways to achieve your goals. 🎯

This is what I found to be true for my art.

I didn’t have the resources, I failed over and over again, yet, I found a way to learn the way I want to draw and kept at it till it became a part of my being.

Consistency is the symptom of Commitment. 💪

2) How do I Commit to Art

How can one commit to something, like growing my art, becoming fitter, starting a YouTube channel or (insert goal).

There are more complex ways of going about it, but the simple way (IMO):

– Say NO to everything that’s other than your commitment &
– Say YES to putting more time, effort and resources in following through well on your commitment.

That means –

When your ‘people drawing’ skills suck,

You say no to “watercolor art” and yes to a drawing anatomy book. 😌

And of course,

Easier said than done 🤷‍♂️

But one can make it easy, by using the 2-min rule to practice the commitment.

Ex: I have committed to drawing daily, at least for 2 mins.

And when I didn’t have time (or my sketchbook) on my recent vacation to draw,

I took the nearby notepad and pencil the hotel gives you and drew for 2 mins. ✍️

Do what needs to be done to stay committed in the long run. It doesn’t have to be perfect,

You just gotta stick with it and see it through.

In any way possible. 😌

3) Favourite Quote of the Week

“Goals are for people who care about winning once. Systems are for people who care about winning repeatedly”

– James clear

That’s all for this week folks,
See you with 3 more things next week.

Best,
Kesh.
