Carpè Diem

1. Carpe Diem

I didn’t know this before.

There’s this ‘Stoic’ principle called ‘Carpe Diem’ – which roughly translates to ‘Seize the day’.

And the whole idea is this,

You’ll only get ONE shot today. Just one and then its gone and lost forever.

What will you do with it?

Seize it, waste it or recover it if it was going to waste?

as Ryan Holiday from ‘Daily Stoic’ puts it

“When someone asks you what you did yesterday, do you really want the answer to be “nothing”?

And that’s an Idea I’d like to carry around for the year.

2. 6 Blocks a Day to be Creative

I conduct my work in time blocks.

I.e. I work  25-mins on  and  5-mins off  (sometimes 50mins and 10mins if I’m in the zone) and I’ve noticed that a day is successful when I put in 6 Blocks of work (roughly 3 hrs of solid deep, undistracted work)

This also coincides with most creatives of our time roughly putting in 3-5hrs of creative work everyday. Books like ‘The Daily Rituals’, which compiles the routines of some of the greatest creative minds of the past century puts forth that idea.

So, If you are creative, try getting in 6 Block of work a day for a period of time and see where it takes you. It has definitely gotten me far.

3. Favourite Quote of the Week

Let us therefore set out whole-heartedly, leaving aside our many distractions and exert ourselves in this single purpose, before we realize too late the swift and unstoppable flight of time and left behind. As each day arises, welcome it as the very best day of all, and make it your own possession. We must seize what flees”

– Seneca, Moral Letters

That’s it for this week folks.
See you in the next one 🙂

Best
Kesh.
