1. Do This for 1000 Nights
Here’s a little piece of advice on Writing from Ray Bradbury on getting better at your craft (which can apply to any art) 👇
“Write a short story every week. It’s not possible to write 52 bad short stories in a row….before you go to bed every night, read one short story.”
He then elaborates WHY…
“The problem with novels is that you can spend a whole year writing one and it might not turn out well because you haven’t learned to write yet. But the best hygiene for beginning writers or intermediate writers is to write a hell of a lot of short stories. If you can write one short story a week — it doesn’t matter what the quality is to start — but at least you’re practicing and at the end of the year you have 52 short stories and I defy you to write 52 bad ones. It can’t be done.”
His Advice 🧠
“I’ll give you a programme to follow every night. Very simple programme. For the next thousand nights, before you go to bed every night, read one short story. That will take you ten minutes, fifteen minutes…for the next 1,000 nights.”
How to apply this to Art? 🤔
2. Consume, Create, Iterate
Ray is basically saying the following:
– Consume a lot for good stuff on a schedule.
– Put out stuff regularly on a schedule (every week if you are a beginner)
– Focus on quantity first before quality.
If I were to apply this to Comics or Animation, it would look like:
✏️ Create a Short Comic/Storyboard every week.
📚 Watch a film every night or Read a comic for 1000 nights.
3. Favourite Quote of the Week
“Routine, in an intelligent man, is a sign of ambition”
– W.H. Auden
That’s it for this week folks.
See you in the next one 🙂
Best
