Why do you Draw?

1) You Need Drawing Values

I’ve been doing a lot of work on myself lately (as in, improving my life and understanding why I do things)

And one of the surprising things that has helped me, is this question:

“What is important to you?” 🤔

Aka what do you value in life? What actions, ways of being, things and goals.

Because these are the factors that is driving us from within by helping us DECIDE what to do.

Like filters on a holiday website that gives you much more concrete options to choose from.

But without those filters – you have endless options and decision paralysis.

Like that, I’ve been trying to understand ‘Why I draw?’

‘What’s important to me in drawing?’ ✏️

For me;

• It’s the act itself – I enjoy it

• I love to have a craft where I can seek and grow in.

• I can tell stories and tales that kindles other people’s imagination and their being.

• These 3 come from my fundamental want to be creative, make stuff and share it with people.

This is why I do it. 😌

So these days, I like to look for these traits in my projects and illustrations.

Knowing this helps me understand the motivations underneath my actions – which saves me from being a puppet to my own wants.

So question –

What is important to you?

What do you or Why do you value your art practice?

2) How to Create an Artistic Vision (the easy way)

I came across this fantastic reel from Y combinator – They are btw, an incubator who has grown some of the largest companies we’ve heard of (like Airbnb)

And they were talking about how having a clear vision ruins things and what to do instead.

The advice was;

“To have a direction instead of a vision”

Keshart Explorer

People who’ve built big companies like Microsoft and Facebook don’t have clear vision of where they want to go at the start –

Rather, once they find that something is working – they have a DIRECTION 🗺️

Like how Christopher Columbus was like “let’s head West to find India, there’s something there”

How to apply this to art?

• What’s working in your artistic practice? Any good projects and illustrations that meets your values more than others?

• Go in the direction that aligns with your values by picking a project in that arena.

• Finish it – do more of what’s working and do less of what’s not.

This is what I’m doing. Found this to be a very interesting concept that ties all the things I’ve learned so far.

Here’s the reel I case you wanna watch it.👇

2) Favourite Quote of the Week

“If you are willing to suck at anything for 100 days in a row, you can almost beat anyone at anything.”

– Alex Hormozi

That’s all for this week folks,
See you with 3 more things next week.

Best,
Kesh.
