1) The Biggest Lie Artists tell themselves
A few years ago, I came across the term “Multi-potentialite” : Which basically means people who are interested in many things and pursue multiple passions at once.
I thought to myself : “this is 🐂 💩 “
And it is. I tried being a “Multi-Potentialite” for a year only to realize that you can’t do everything in life. And you definitely cannot do all of them at the same time.
– Artists who follow this lie often spin their wheels by keeping their hands on multiple projects, passions and commitments.
It will only burn you out. Here’s why:
– You can either make little progress in many direction or good progress on ONE direction
And burn out comes when you work so hard (in a distracted fashion) without getting anything in return. 🤷♂️
Plus
– You will end up doing a mediocre job on everything that you do. And
– You need to put considerable amount of focus and time in one direction for it to “take off “ (create the escape velocity). And that can’t happen when you do many things at the same time.
No airport in the world allows 2 aeroplanes to take off on the same runway at the same time. ✈️
Yet we do that to ourselves.
2) The Focused Pro Artist
So what do you when you have many passions/interests. 🤔
Here are some tips that has worked for me;
• Work in Projects, not passions.
• Work in seasons – One project per season. (Seasons can be a month long, a quarter, a year or 3 years+)
• Don’t expect to do more than 3 Big Things in a year.
• Have perspective – ask If you could work well till Age 80, how would you structure your life?
• Learn to do things sequentially – One after the other.
• Aim to do No more than 2 Projects/Quarter.
• Aim to Do no more than One big thing a Week.
• Aim to do no more than One project a day.
• Don’t split the project over many months if it can be completed in 30 days – Batch it and complete it.
• Learn to pick your sacrifices – You can’t escape this.
And finally,
Know that your other “passions” will fade away when you really get good at one thing. 😌
The love you get from that one thing will be so high which makes the “side interests” fade into oblivion.
3) Favourite Quote of the Week
“Chase two rabbits, catch neither one”
– Russian Proverb.
That’s all for this week folks,
See you with 3 more things next week.
Best,
Kesh.
