What if I told you Drawing is NOT art. 🤔
My Younger self would have scoffed at this idea.
And he’s mostly right.
But he doesn’t know the secret that I have taken 10 years to learn.
Making art has 2 sides to it – just like a coin has two sides. 🪙
One side is: The Craft
• This is the technique of art.
• The thing everyone focuses on – Lines, shapes, perspective, colour theory, shape language, composition.
• It’s HOW you do things.
The other side is: The Art
• This is what most people ignore – it’s the story.
• It’s not HOW you make something, it’s WHAT you make about.
• What is your art about?
• What do you choose to say or explore or create?
• How well you use your techniques to make something new.
• What kind of IDEAS do you wanna bring to the table.
The first side is the foundation that makes you GOOD at your craft.
The Second side is the one that make your art GREAT. ✏️
The Problem:
Here’s the problem:
Most people focus on the first and forget the second.
An artist always knows that the tools and techniques alone don’t define their art. They’re merely tools and what we choose to do with those tools is what makes art great.
It’s the one that brings HONESTY to one’s own work. 😌
That’s why we appreciate the paintings of Rembrandt and a baby who has scribbled something with innocence on paper.
Both share the quality of good work: Honest Expression.
“Art is the expression of the invisible, though the means of the visible”
– Formentine
The Craft is the Visible parts.
The Ideas are the invisible ones.
The beauty that is created as a result of that dance is art.
So young kesh, Drawing ALONE is not Art. ✍️
It’s more that that.
Hope this idea helps you. Because this has helped me understand the importance of what I say with my art and what I make art about, than just how I make it.

Tomorrow, I’ll share the 3rd “Art Truth” on our 5 Art Truths series – which is
“Why you will hate being an artist, and why that is a good thing”
(told you these would be brutal)
See you then,
Kesh.
