Don’t Know What to Draw?

One of the most common questions I get asked is:

‘What to draw every day?’

Last year, I drew every single day for 365 days.

And I had 365 drawing ideas planned, which made it really easy for me to;

Just Show up and Draw Every day.

Here’s how I did it…

• Pick a Theme

Instead of randomly deciding what to draw each day,

I broke the year into 12 different 30-day drawing challenges (one for each month)

Each challenge is focused on a Specific Skill, like:

   • Fundamentals
   • Character Design
   • Head Drawing
   • Anime Heads
   • Posing
   • Hands
   • Gesture drawing and more…

Every theme was chosen with one larger goal in mind, which is:

Getting Better at Drawing Comics and Animation.

And once you pick a theme, you need to…

• Decide the Outcome

You need to define a Clear Outcome for your practice. 🎯

For example, when I chose ‘Gesture/Dynamic Poses’ as my topic for the month of March 2025, my goal was simple:

I wanted to draw strong, dynamic poses with good forms.

Once my outcome was clear, the next steps are easy:

  You Collect references that help achieve the outcome.

  You Study and draw from those references.

  You Review the drawings, give yourself a short feedback, and improve.

That’s it.

When you work this way,
You won’t run out of ideas.

You’re NOT guessing what to draw ❌
You’re Practicing with Intention ✔️

So to summarize:

   • Choose themes that support your bigger goal.

   • Decide the outcome you want from each theme.

   • Use references and give feedback to guide your practice.

And most importantly;

• Draw What Interests You ✏️
