I once had a day job that was ‘ok’.
I was a Video producer at an ad agency. 🎥
I was doing what I liked,
But something was missing.
I thought, Me not making Art was the issue.
Long story short:
I quit my job, started my art journey,
Built a business around, made more money than I needed,
I was doing what I loved,
But,
That ‘Something’ was still missing. 😵💫
And I realized another piece of truth that changed my life;
“You can’t be happy everyday, even if you’d followed your passion”
The Unrealistic Dream:
”Find a job you really enjoy, and you’ll never work a day in your life”
– Mark Twain
Most people have heard of this Quote and it’s absolutely true, but not in the way you think.
Most people, like me at the beginning have an unrealistic dream. 🤷♂️
• They expect each and every day to be amazing, passionate and exciting.
I have started many Art Projects that I was very excited about.
And have spent months dreading it once I get to the middle. 🫠
I questioned my path because someone told me that
“I “should” enjoy each and everyday of my work.”
“Especially if its my passion. And If I don’t, then it’s probably not my passion??”
This is absurd. ❌
Because the reality is this:
• No matter how much you enjoy your job, there will be very many days, where you are bored, frustrated, anxious, wondering if you should quit, sad or just depressed.
The sun isn’t up all day and so will be your mood.
Your Dream job is still a job. 😌
And you can’t expect to be happy everyday.
It’s not what you do, but how well you do it that matters.
The happiness we seek in our work can always be found today,
provided we are passionate.
And here – “Passion” is not love.
The word passion comes form the Latin word ‘Pati’ which actually means suffering.
Later, the word became synonymous with intense emotions. Then intense emotions like love.
So, The question is;
‘what are you willing to be passionate about?’
aka what are you willing to suffer for?
What kind of work is worth fighting for?
I’m willing to suffer for my art and my mission.
That’s what I’m passionate about and therefore, It doesn’t feel like work. ✏️
Hope this idea lowers some weight off your shoulders,
Tomorrow, I’ll share the 4th “harsh art truth” in our 5 part series and it’s this;
“You don’t have to struggle financially to be an artist, because anyone can be an Art millionaire, if you know how to serve”.
Till then,
Art away,
Kesh.
